The Hapa Project is a groundbreaking multimedia exploration of multiracial identity in America, created by artist and photographer Kip Fulbeck. Through portraits and personal statements, the project challenges rigid racial categorization and celebrates the diversity of individuals with mixed Asian or Pacific Islander heritage.
Amy has been honored to be part of The Hapa Project since its early days. She was first photographed in 2003, offering her own handwritten response to the central question: “What are you?” Her portrait and words were featured in Fulbeck’s book Part Asian, 100% Hapa and have appeared in major exhibitions across the U.S., including the Field Museum in Chicago and the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
Over the years, Amy’s involvement has continued through subsequent retrospectives, including The Asian American Literary Review’s “Mixed Race in a Box” and the 15-year follow-up project, hapa.me.

Her participation in The Hapa Project remains a deeply meaningful reflection of her lived experience as a mixed-race individual and as an artist committed to identity, representation, and visibility.
